Copywriter or DIY...which is best for your business?

How To Tell If You Should Write Your Own Copy or Hire A Copywriter.

When should you hire a copywriter? When you set up a business…when it's growing or …when the company is well established?  Now you may expect me to say yes; of course, you need a copywriter immediately, as that’s what I do.

However, after owning my own merchandise business for many years, I understand that all businesses have different needs and budgets. In this blog, we will look at when is the best time to hire a copywriter to allow you to maximise your sales and your investment.

Is A Copywriter Essential To Grow A Business?

In an ideal world, hiring a copywriter from the start is a brilliant idea as you have excellent copy to attract the right clients from the beginning, and it frees up time to do the work you’re good at. The work that directly brings in money, which is vital to any business.

However, often things are not always that simple, and it isn't right for every business. Money is not always as abundant as you’d like, and there could be other things that you need your budget for. So, I don't want you to feel bad or stop making progress due to the lack of a copywriter.

When a copywriter isn't essential

  • You don't need many clients and have enough coming in with the copy you have.

  • You're creating a new product and are at the stage of BETA testing things. Therefore, you don't require many people to join for the first round.

  • You enjoy writing for your business and have the time to do it.

When The Time Is Right For A Copywriter.

  • You have an excellent product or service which has been tested, and you’re now ready to expand those early sales.

  • You find writing copy takes up time you don't have.

  • You are attracting too many of the wrong customers.

You have an excellent product or service and are ready to expand.

You may have gained valuable information and feedback from the beta test or previous sales and want to increase sales and conversions.

Your client's feedback will be valuable; it shows the value someone else got from using your product. Feedback from a third party is always more powerful than that from the business and will make the copy customer-focused and convert more sales.

This is a perfect time to use the services of a copywriter. They can use your gathered information to write compelling copy for your product or service and increase sales.

The right sales page can be hugely valuable to your business, like having a sales team that never sleeps. This is why direct-response copywriting is described as salesmanship in print.

Writing Copy Takes Up too Much Time.

If writing copy takes up too much of your time or doesn’t get created because you always run out of time, it makes sense to hire the services of a copywriter. You’ll probably find that a copywriter will create the content in half the time. You’ll feel like a weight has been lifted as you’ll have one less thing on your to-do list to keep moving from one week to the next.

You’re attracting too many of the wrong customers.

Every business has its ideal clients, the ones they know will get the most out of their product or service, the ones they love working with. Their sweet spot, if you will. Now, if you’re attracting lots of people who don't fit in this bracket, it may be due to how your copy is written. Having a copywriter to write the copy, which is focused on the ideal client, will help to attract the right people. If you like writing the copy yourself, you may be able to get a copywriter to advise you where you need to make these changes, like the copy critique service I offer.

If money is tight, looking at your chosen copywriter's options is a good idea, as many offer copy critiques, which help you improve your copy and will be helpful for now and for any future copy you write.

To sum up, copywriter or DIY?

So, to sum this up. Sometimes, having a copywriter from the start isn’t always necessary or correct. However, a copywriter is vital if you want to free up some time, maximise your sales and have a sales copy that’ll make the most of your product. Yes, it will cost you money; however, you’ll soon reap back your investment and take your business to bigger and better things as long as you choose the right copywriter.

The most important thing to do is communicate with your copywriter, let them know what you would like to achieve and then give them the time to research and create the copy.
